There are number of private and NHS dentists in Birmingham. Patients can choose between those two types of dental clinics, although waiting for an NHS dentists in Birmingham are usually long. NHS dental treatments are less expensive compared with costs in private dental clinics. However, the quality of materials used at NHS practises is also lower (i.e. only amalgam fillings are available).
It also should be noted that cosmetic dental treatments such us teeth whitening, dental implants, porcelain veneers or white fillings are not available under NHS can only be obtained privately. Costs of dental treatments in private clinics in Birmingham are higher but with the higher costs usually come better finish and quality of materials used.

There are three types of charges that an NHS dentists in Birmingham apply (set by Department of Health):

- £16.50  Examination and diagnosis

- £45.60 Examination and extra treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment or extractions

- £198 The treatments covered in first two bands and other, more advanced treatments (i.e. dentures or crowns)
